Ryan’s obsession with martial arts began exactly where you’d expect for a child of the 80s: fueled by The Karate Kid and the era's ninja craze. What started as a childhood fascination evolved into a lifelong pursuit of functional self-defence. Over the decades, Ryan explored everything from Judo and MMA to Jeet Kune Do and Systema, always searching for the most effective way to handle real-world confrontations.
That search eventually led him to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Recognizing that while fights may start standing, they often end up on the ground - Ryan found that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu's approach filled the "grappling gap" better than any other discipline.
Today, Ryan’s focus has shifted from combat to community. While he remains dedicated to the street-proven effectiveness of the art, it’s the camaraderie and the "mat family" that keeps him inspired.
Ryan earned his Instructor Certification in 2023 and is dedicated to helping students find their own path to confidence and survival through the practice of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu here at TCGJJ.
